I never thought it'd come to this

"A Birkenstock!!"....if any of you are intimately familiar with Jane's Addiction you will recall a live album they put out in the early 90s. At some point during the concert a fan threw a shoe onto the stage and it was...you guessed it...A Birkenstock. Jane's lead singer Perry Farrel (rhymes with "peripheral") stops the song and goes on a momentary diatribe in his distinctly high pitched tone...peace man..."man I never thought it'd come to this...A Birkenstock...A Birkenstock."

When I first heard the interlude, I didn't get it. What does he mean..."i never thought it'd come to this..." allusion to the world is ending. Then I got it. Birkenstock wearers, a group I formerly belonged to for a brief year during my college years, are generally known as peaceful, flower/earth loving folk who wouldn't kill a bee, let alone throw a shoe at a lead singer of a rock band. I was a bit different. I was a Birkenstock wearer who happened to play on the college football team.

So...in that same vein and in honor of a once great Rock Band..."I never thought it'd come to this"...Gregory B. Lewis, a respectable yet woefully unpublished writer would resort to blogging...at one point it seemed so beneath my own feeling of self-importance bolstered by the surreality that I knew someday my books and writings would be littered throughout your homes, libraries and bookstores. And yes someday that too will come...But now this blogging thing seems to be a perfect vehicle to share my own brand of philosophical, political, pop culture musings...combined with daily postings about my own struggle to make a dollar out of a penny while living in one of the most diverse, expensive regions in the world. Let's see how the days go. It has indeed come to this.
